Note with VS - v1.0.0 & Open-vsx.org Support

NoteWithVs v1.0.1
v1.0.0 Released | Built with ❤️ for people who value privacy and local-first tools

We're thrilled to announce the release of Note with VS version 1.0.0! This milestone release brings massive performance improvements and user experience enhancements that make managing your notes faster and more intuitive than ever before.

If you've been using Note with VS to manage your markdown notes, you're going to love what we've built for you.

What's New in Version 1.0.0?

Lightning-Fast Performance !

The biggest change you'll notice immediately is speed. We've completely reimagined how Note with VS handles your notes, especially if you have a large collection.

Intelligent Caching That Just Works

Previously, every time you refreshed your notes, the extension had to read every single file from your disk. If you had 500 notes, that meant 500 file reads every single time. Not anymore!

Version 1.0.0 introduces an intelligent caching system that remembers what it has already read. Think of it like this: instead of going to the library and reading every book from scratch each time you visit, you now have a photographic memory that recalls what you've already read.

But here's the clever part - the cache automatically updates when you make changes. Edit a note? The cache knows. Add a new note? The cache knows. Delete a note? You guessed it - the cache knows and updates accordingly.

Great News !

Open-vsk.org Support

Available Across Multiple Editors

AI Editor Support
open-vsx support

Note with VS is now available on the Open VSX Registry, which means you can use it not just in VS Code, but across a wide range of compatible editors:

No matter which editor you prefer, you can enjoy the same powerful, privacy-focused note-taking experience. Your notes, your editor, your choice!

Real-World Performance Improvements

Let's talk numbers that matter to you:

Small Collection (50 notes):

  • Before: Waiting 800 milliseconds for your notes to load

  • Now: Just 300 milliseconds - that's 62% faster!

Medium Collection (200 notes):

  • Before: A frustrating 2.5 seconds wait

  • Now: A breezy 600 milliseconds - 76% faster!

Large Collection (500 notes):

  • Before: An agonizing 6.5 seconds

  • Now: Only 1.2 seconds - 81% faster!

Very Large Collection (1000+ notes):

  • Before: 15 seconds of waiting

  • Now: Just 2.5 seconds - 83% faster!

The first time you open VS Code, it takes a moment to build the cache. But after that? Everything is blazingly fast. Refresh your notes, search through them, switch between views - it all happens in the blink of an eye.

🔄 Smarter File Processing

Behind the scenes, we've also changed how the extension reads your notes. Instead of reading files one by one (like standing in a single-file line at the grocery store), we now read multiple files at the same time (like having multiple checkout counters open).

For example, if you have 10 folders with 50 notes each, what used to take 5 seconds now takes just 1.5 seconds on the initial load. That's the power of working smarter, not harder.

📊 See Everything at a Glance

We've added item counts to each section of the extension. Now you can instantly see:

- How many notes you have

- How many reminders are pending

- How many templates you've created

This is especially helpful when you're searching or filtering your notes. You'll immediately know how many items match your search without having to count them manually.

📋 Smarter Clipboard Notes

The "Copy to Clipboard" feature has gotten a major upgrade. When you copy content to create a quick note, the extension now remembers where it came from.

  • Before: Your clipboard note was named something generic like "Clipboard_2023-12-02.md"

  • Now: It includes the source filename, like "ProjectIdeas_CLP_2023-12-02_14-30-45.md"

Why does this matter? Imagine you're in a meeting, quickly copy some important points from different documents, and create several clipboard notes. A week later, you're reviewing your clipboard folder and wondering "Where did this come from?" Now you'll know instantly!

If you're copying from an untitled document, it still defaults to the generic "Clipboard_timestamp.md" format.

⚙️ Control Your Clipboard Sync

We've added a new setting that gives you control over whether your clipboard notes should be synced to Git.

By default, clipboard notes stay local-only. They're meant to be temporary, quick captures that you might not want in your permanent note repository. But if you do want to sync them, simply enable the "Sync Clipboard Folder" setting, and they'll be included in your Git operations.

This gives you the flexibility to use clipboard notes however works best for your workflow.

🔍 Smarter Refresh Button

Here's a small but delightful improvement: the Refresh button now automatically clears any active search.

  • Before: You'd search for something, then have to click "Clear Search" and then "Refresh" to get back to your full note list.

  • Now: Just click "Refresh" and you're instantly back to your complete note list.

It's a small change, but it's these little touches that make your daily workflow smoother.

🎯 Progress Indicators for Long Operations

When you're working with a large note collection or syncing to Git, you'll now see a progress dialog that shows you exactly what's happening. No more wondering "Is it frozen or just working?"

Even better - you can cancel long-running operations if you need to. Started a search but realized you need to do something else first? Just cancel it and come back later.

💡 What This Means for Your Daily Workflow

For the Quick Note-Taker

If you're someone who creates dozens of quick notes throughout the day, you'll love how fast everything responds now. Create a note, switch views, search for something - it all happens instantly.

For the Power User

Managing hundreds or thousands of notes? This update was built with you in mind. The performance improvements mean you can scale your note collection without worrying about slowdowns. Your 1000-note collection will feel just as snappy as a 50-note collection.

For the Organized Professional

The enhanced clipboard feature with source tracking means you can quickly capture information from various sources and still maintain perfect traceability. Your future self will thank you when you're reviewing notes weeks later.

For the Git Enthusiast

The new clipboard sync control gives you fine-grained control over what gets committed to your repository. Keep your temporary notes local while syncing your permanent knowledge base - the best of both worlds.

📈 Tips for Getting the Most Out of Version 1.0.0

Organize with Folders

Use folders (we call them "labels") to organize your notes by project, topic, or any system that works for you. The parallel processing works beautifully with well-organized folder structures.

Let the Cache Build

The first time you open VS Code after updating, give it a moment to build the cache. After that, everything will be lightning-fast. Think of it as a one-time investment for long-term speed gains.

Use Search Confidently

With the new caching system, searching through hundreds of notes is now fast and responsive. Don't hesitate to search - the extension can handle it.

Customize Your Clipboard Settings

Take a moment to decide whether you want clipboard notes synced to Git. There's no right or wrong answer - it depends on how you use the feature. The setting is there to match your workflow.

🌟 Why This Update Matters

At its core, Note with VS is about giving you a fast, private, local-first way to manage your notes without relying on cloud services. Version 1.0.0 takes that promise and supercharges it.

You shouldn't have to choose between privacy and performance. You shouldn't have to wait for your notes to load. You shouldn't have to wonder where a note came from.

With version 1.0.0, you don't have to compromise on any of these things.

🎯 Looking Ahead

This is just the beginning. We're already working on exciting features for future releases:

- Advanced search with more powerful filtering options

- Note linking to connect related ideas

- Export options to share your notes in different formats

- A tag system for even more flexible organization

- Desktop notifications for your reminders

But for now, we're incredibly proud of what version 1.0.0 brings to the table, and we can't wait for you to experience it.
