SBI - Saving Account KYC - How to submit KYC?

This article will give you steps which I took to update my SBI saving account KYC from a remote place.

Currently, I am in Bangalore, Karnataka, and my SBI Saving account is in Palani Branch, TamilNadu

Unlike other private sector banks, SBI does not have online KYC submission options.

If you are in the Same State, probably you can go to any branch of SBI and submit the document to update it. I am in a different state, so I have to do a bit more extra steps to update by KYC without visiting Tamil Nadu branch. For more detailed steps.

When ever i google for this KYC document submition i get the videos and article for PAN and Aadhar submition steps in online or KYC update for credit cards and mutual funds. This article talk about KYC for SBI saving account which already linked with Aadhar and PAN card with their account.

What is KYC?

Know Your Customer - KYC

Any organization which is dealing with Money transactions (Bank, Mutual fund, e-Wallets, Credit/Debit Cards etc) needs to verify their customer authenticity to avoid illegal transactions. These organization will ask for customer’s Identity and Address proof to make sure every transaction by the customers are accounted for.

It is increasingly common for banking institutions, credit companies, and insurance agencies to require that their customers provide them with detailed information in order to ensure that they are not involved with corruption, bribery, or money laundering.

This process used to be there before but not enforced which caused illegal money transactions. To avoid this now RBI made made this as mandatory.

Why KYC is important to Bank?

KYC is important because it helps the banker to ensure that the application and other details are real. There have been instances of fraud and siphoning off of money from accounts. By ensuring the identity of individuals, it would help to prevent fraud.

Even when you already submit the KYC documents once, the banks can ask again as they are required to periodically update KYC records.

This is a part of their ongoing due diligence on bank accounts. The periodicity of such an update would vary from account to account or categories of accounts depending on the bank's perception of risk.

Officially Valid Documents(OVDs)

As part of KYC verification, customers need to submit any of the following documents. These are the documents suggested by RBI as officially valid documents (OVD) to complete KYC submission.

  1. Passport

  2. Driving Licence

  3. Voters' Identity Card

  4. PAN Card

  5. Aadhaar Card issued by UIDAI

  6. NREGA Card

  7. Letter from the National Population Register containing details of name and address

Online Vs Offline?

Updating KYC is vary from bank to bank and account to account.

Private banks like Axis and ICIC having an online form to update KYC.

If you already linked with Aadhar number with your account on these banks, you just need to initiate the Aadhar verification (OTP will be sent to the registered mobile number of the Aadhar) directly from online.

Few banks like SBI do not have this online option. We have to visit the branch to submit the document(Offline) However they have different ways to get this information to make a bit more convenient for the account holder.

You no need to go to the branch (Where you have the account)to submit the document, you can do it in any branch of SBI (Within the same state).
